Am Montagmittag war es Zeit weiterzuziehen... Mwinza und Alfred Junior holten mich in der Thunduzi Lodge (+265 997 38 0101) ab und wir fuhren 2 h und 70 km Richtung Norden nach Karonga. Sie luden mich in der Golden Sand Beach Lodge (+265 998 09 8004) ab und fuhren zur Stadt, wo Junior sein defektes Telefon reparieren lassen wollte...
Ich richtete mich in meinem Bungalow ein und begutachte meine Umgebung... es hatte eine Küche, die mit Holz gefeuert wurde, aber die Angestellten sagten, dass sie kein Abendessen servierten... später benachrichtigte mich der Besitzer, dass es ab morgen Abendessen gibt. So machte ich mich zu Fuss ins Städtchen, wo ich Junior traf... im Sana genossen wir eine Pizza.
On Monday at noon, it was time to move on... Mwinza and Alfred Junior picked me up at Thunduzi Lodge (+265 997 38 0101) and we drove 2 hours and 70 km north to Karonga. They dropped me off at the Golden Sand Beach Lodge (+265 998 0980) and drove into town, where Junior wanted to get his broken phone repaired.
I settled into my bungalow and took in my surroundings. There was a wood-fired kitchen, but the staff said they weren't serving dinner. Later, the owner informed me that dinner would be available tomorrow. So I walked into town, where I met Junior. We enjoyed a pizza at Sana.

Die Golden Sand Beach Lodge liegt ebenfalls direkt am Malawi See... links und rechts eine Joggingstrecke auf goldenem Strand - inklusive Schwimmen im 30° warmen Wasser! : ) Und ich erhielt freundlicherweise einen Router, so dass ich viel Arbeit aufholen konnte: Schreiben an diesem Reiseblog und Planung meiner Weiterreise. : )
The Golden Sand Beach Lodge is also located directly on Lake Malawi, with a jogging track on golden sand on either side – and I could even swim in the 30° C warm water! : ) I was kindly given a router, so I could catch up on a lot of work: writing this travel blog and planning the next leg of my trip. : )

Karonga ist etwas grösser als Chilumba und hat sogar ein Museum zu bieten, wo der Malawi Saurus ausgestellt ist.
Karonga is a bit bigger than Chilumba and even has a museum, where the Malawi Saurus is on display.
Mwinza (+265 999 93 55 36) stellte sich als idealen Taxifahrer heraus, der in Karonga wohnt und täglich nach Chilumba und zurück fährt. Er organisierte mir Happy und Christof, die mich am Freitag Richtung Westen nach Chitipa fuhren. Von dort wollte ich am nächsten Tag weiter nach Nakonde, Sambia, um den Tazara Zug zu erreichen... Die beiden luden mich nach 100 km und 2 Stunden in der Tulipoka Lodge (+265 888 82 92 71) ab. Als ich dort ankam, war gerade eine Tanzgruppe ein Video am Filmen! : )
Mwinza (+265 999 93 55 36) turned out to be the ideal taxi driver. He lives in Karonga and drives to and from Chilumba daily. He arranged Happy and Christof to drive me west to Chitipa on Friday. From there, I planned to continue on to Nakonde, Zambia, to catch the Tazara train the next day... After a 100 km and 2-hour drive, they dropped me off at the Tulipoka Lodge (+265 888 82 92 71). When I arrived, a dance group was filming a video! : )
Am Nachmittag nahm mich Austin der Tulipoka Lodge mit ins Städtchen um mir zu helfen, ein Taxi nach Nakonde zu finden... dies stellte sich als eine echte Herausforderung heraus: Die direkte Strasse (Old Stevenson Road) nach Sambia ist in sehr schlechtem Zustand, vor allem im Winter wegen des vielen Regens... deshalb ist sie nur per Motorrad passierbar! Eine noch schlechtere Alternative war über Tansania nach Sambia einreisen, was bedeutet: Nochmals ein Visum für einen Tag zu beantragen und penible Kontrollen an den Grenzen, wo die Autos vollständig geleert werden... beides mit langen Wartezeiten! - Halleluja, es bleibt spannend! Ich werde morgen entscheiden und sehen, was das Wetter meint...
Ja, morgen geht meine Reise durch Malawi dem Ende zu... es ist ein sehr grünes und friedliches Land. Die Leute begegnen einem mit tiefer Herzlichkeit und tragen fast alle ein Lächeln auf dem Gesicht. : ) - Was hätte ich alles verpasst, wenn ich dieses abenteuerliche Land nicht besucht hätte... und das wäre um ein Haar geschehen:
Als ich mein Visum für Malawi online beantragte, bemerkte ich, dass ich zwei Gastgeberbriefe beilegen musste... Ich verstand nicht, was sie genau wollten und kontaktierte die offizielle Visum Behörde. Es meldete sich ein Lottie Banda, der mir versicherte, dass es besser wäre, einen zweiten Brief eines Reiseveranstalter beizulegen, der US Dollar 100 kosten würde... - Was? Ich musste für ein Visum und einen Brief bezahlen? So etwas habe ich bisher noch nicht erlebt und ich kontaktierte Paul der Kabula Lodge (https://kabulalodgemalawi.com) in Blantyre, wo ich nach meiner Einreise logiert hatte. Er schickte mir seinen Gastgeberbrief und sagte mir, ich soll ihn bei der Visumanfrage zweimal herunterladen... und sehen, was passiert...
Inzwischen hatte Lottie Banda mich nach meinem Plan in Malawi gefragt und ich antwortete, dass ich noch nicht ganz so weit mit Planen bin, aber von Blantyre nach Monkey Bay mit zwei Stopps reisen möchte um dann mit der MV Ilala auf dem Malawisee weiterzufahren... Er schrieb mir, dass er mir dabei gerne behilflich sein möchte und offerierte mir ein privates Fahrzeug für US-Dollar 1500-2000 von Blantyre nach Monkey Bay.... Ich war geschockt über diesen hohen Preis und erklärte ihm, dass ich normalerweise meine Reisen selber organisiere und das auch hier so handhaben möchte. Das ärgerte ihn und er antwortete, ich soll aufpassen, dass ich nicht betrogen werde... Ich fragte ihn, ob Malawi ein unsicheres Land ist und wollte schon meine Pläne ändern! : (
Drei Tage später wurde mein Visum bestätigt und sobald ich in Malawi war, bemerkte ich, dass der, der mich übers Ohr hauen wollte, Lottie Banda war: Meine dreiteilige Fahrt von Blantyre nach Monkey Bay kostete zehnmal weniger mit Privatfahrzeugen!!! - Genau solche offiziellen Beamten schrecken Touristen ab ihr Land zu besuchen und bewirken das Gegenteil, was Malawi eigentlich will! - Wie schade! : (( Nichtsdestotrotz erlebte ich eine ganz spannende und abenteuerliche Zeit hier im Land des warmen Herzen von Afrika! : ))

In the afternoon, Austin from Tulipoka Lodge took me into town to help me find a taxi to Nakonde... this turned out to be a real challenge: The direct road (Old Stevenson Road) to Zambia is in very bad condition, especially in winter due to the heavy rains... therefore, it's only passable by motorbike! An even worse alternative was to enter Zambia via Tanzania, which means: applying for another visa for one day and undergoing meticulous border checks, where cars are completely emptied... both with long waiting times! - Hallelujah, it remains exciting! I'll decide tomorrow and see what the weather has to say...
Yes, tomorrow my trip through Malawi comes to an end... it's a very green and peaceful country. The people greet you with deep warmth and almost all of them have a smile on their face. : ) - What would I have missed, if I hadn't visited this adventurous country... and this almost happened:
When I applied for my visa for Malawi online, I noticed that I had to include two host letters... I didn't understand what exactly they wanted and contacted the official visa office. A Lottie Banda got in touch with me and assured me that it would be better to include a second letter from a tour operator, which would cost US$100... - What? I had to pay for a visa and a letter? I'd never experienced anything like it before, so I contacted Paul at Kabula Lodge (https://kabulalodgemalawi.com) in Blantyre, where I had stayed after arriving in Malawi. He sent me his host letter and told me to download it twice when applying for the visa... and see what happened...
Meanwhile, Lottie Banda had asked me about my plans in Malawi and I replied that I wasn't quite there yet with the planning, but I wanted to travel from Blantyre to Monkey Bay with two stops and then continue on the MV Ilala on Lake Malawi... He wrote to me that he would be happy to help me with that and offered me a private vehicle for US$ 1500-2000 from Blantyre to Monkey Bay... I was shocked by this high price and explained to him that I usually organize my own trips and wanted to do the same here. That annoyed him and he replied that I should be careful not to get scammed... I asked him if Malawi was an unsafe country and was about to change my plans! : (
Three days later, my visa was confirmed, and as soon as I arrived in Malawi, I realized that the person who had tried to rip me off was Lottie Banda: My three-part trip from Blantyre to Monkey Bay cost ten times less with private vehicles!!! - It's exactly these kinds of officials who discourage tourists from visiting their country and achieve the opposite of what Malawi actually wants! - What a shame! : (( Nevertheless, I spent a very exciting and adventurous time here in the land of the warm heart of Africa! : ))
