Sonntag um 5:30 Uhr wurde ich vom Shuttlebus der Mkamiti Villa (+255 75 178 180) in 10 Minuten zum internationalen
Flughafen von DarEssalaam gefahren... Ich bezahlte US-Dollar 20 für einen
Koffer mehr Gepäck, sie nahmen mir mein Feuerzeug weg, aber das Wasser liessen
sie einem. Mit Aus- und Anziehen sowie Aus- und Einpacken verging die Wartezeit
schnell und schon sass ich in der Air Malawi Maschine (gebucht mit Ethiopian
Airlines: https://www.ethiopianairlines.com). Wir starteten 15 Minuten vor
geplant um 8:40 Uhr, das Wetter war aber leider sehr bewölkt, so dass ich nicht
viele Fotos schiessen konnte. Ich sah aber, dass Malawi sehr grün ist...
On Sunday at 5:30 am I was taken by the Mkamiti Villa (+255 75 178 180) shuttlebus to Dar Essalaam International Airport in 10 minutes. I paid US$ 20 for an extra suitcase, they confiscated my lighter, but they let keep the water. Waiting passed quickly with changing clothes and repacking at the check points and soon I was sitting in the Air Malawi plane (booked with Ethiopian Airlines: https://www.ethiopianairlines.com). We took off 15 minutes ahead of schedule of 8:40 am but unfortunately, the weather was very cloudy, so I didn't take many photos. I did see, however, that Malawi is very green…

Eineinhalb
Stunden später landeten wir im kleinen Flughafen von Blantyre, Malawi (-1 h)
etwas nach 9 Uhr. Kurz darauf war ich draussen und wurde von Cliff empfangen,
dem Fahrer der Kabula Lodge (http://www.kabulalodgemalawi.com), wo ich für zwei Nächte ein
Zimmer gebucht hatte. Unterwegs besorgten wir mir eine SIM Karte Geld aus einem
funktionierenden Geldautomaten.
An hour and a half later, we landed at the small airport in Blantyre, Malawi (-1 hour), a little after 9 am. Shortly after I was outside and met by Cliff, the driver from Kanula Lodge (http://www.kabulalodgemalawi.com), where I had booked a room for two nights. On the way, we got me a SIM card and some cash from a working ATM.

Wie
bereits bemerkt ist Malawi seeehr grün und hügelig, momentan mit Temperaturen
um 16-26. Die Strassen sind bisher fantastisch - mit Hilfe der Chinesen!
Blantyre ist die 2. grösste und eine wachsende Stadt (wie alle)... das neue
Einkaufszentrum ist der Treffpunkt... und fast alle sprechen gut englisch! : )
As already mentioned, Malawi is very green and hilly, currently with temperatures around 16-26 centigrade. The roads are fantastic so far – thanks to the Chinese! Blantyre is the second largest and a growing city (like all cities)... the new shopping centre is the place to meet... and almost everyone speaks good English! : )

Auf einem
Stadtrundgang hatte ich King Jopo (+265 995 64 22
40) kennengelernt, der mich am Dienstag Morgen in der Kabula Lodge
abholte und in 1 1/2 Stunden und 65 km nach Zomba fuhr. Dort quartierte ich
mich für zwei Nächte im Takonda BnB (+265 99746 78
77) ein. Zomba ist die 4. grösste Stadt Malawis und ehemalige Hauptstadt
- ein sehr liebevolles Städtchen!
During a city tour I met King Jopo (+265 995 64 22 40), who picked me up at Kabula Lodge on Tuesday morning and drove me 65 km (1.5 hours) to Zomba. There, I stayed for two nights at Takonda BnB (+265 99746 78 77). Zomba is the fourth largest city in Malawi and the former capital – a very charming little town!

Mittwoch mit seinem Motorrad ab und wir fuhren etwa 1000 m hinauf zum Zomba
Plateau. Bevor es zu Fuss weiter zum Williams Wasserfall ging, genossen wir im
Sunbird (https://www.sunbirdmalawi.com/hotels/sunbird-ku-chawe.html) eine herrliche Aussicht und
Cappuccino... Bald fand ich heraus, dass Jonas nicht nur ein Fremdenführer ist
und viel weiss, sondern auch an einigen interessante Umweltprojekten
arbeitet... er ist zum Beispiel der Gründer von Nankhunda Transformation und
Zomba Tour Guides Association…
Fiskali of the Takonda BnB had arranged Jonas (https://www.zombaguides.com) for me... he picked me up on Wednesday with his motorbike, and we drove about 1000 m (3,000 ft) up to the Zomba Plateau. Before continuing on foot to Williams Waterfall, we enjoyed a magnificent view and cappuccino at the Sunbird (https://www.sunbirdmalawi.com/hotels/sunbird-ku-chawe.html). I soon discovered that Jonas is not only a knowledgeable tour guide, but also works on some interesting environmental projects, such as being the founder of Nankhunda Transformation and the Zomba Tour Guides Association...

Am
Donnerstag fuhr mich Godfrey (+265 884 11 0 97)
von Zomba 75 km und 2 1/2 h nach Liwonde, weiter Richtung Norden. Ihn hatte ich
auf einem Spaziergang durch Zomba kennen gelernt. Dieses Stück der Strasse war
echt schlimm, eine richtige Lötscherpiste! Nach 2 Stunden erreichten wir
unseren Zwischenstopp die Malape Säulen - eine willkommene Pause! : )
On Thursday, Godfrey (+265 884 11 0 97) drove me from Zomba 75 km and 2.5 hours to Liwonde, further north. I had met him during a walk through Zomba. That stretch of road was truly awful, a real hole track! After two hours, we reached our breakpoint at the Malape Pillars – a welcome break! : )
